Carol Ann Simone will be returning this year as Miss Lizzie, dressed in the famous pink and white striped wrapper Lizzie put on the day of the murders. Lizzie went upstairs to her room not long after Abby’s body was discovered, went into her sister Emma’s closet and took out the wrapper, a sort of loose housecoat. She said in her inquest testimony that “they thought I should go upstairs” indicating she was directed to do this, when in actual fact nobody suggested she should put on the wrapper and go to her room, which was only feet from the dead body of her stepmother in the guest room.
Later Lizzie would give the police a navy blue bengaline silk skirt and waist, claiming that was what she was wearing all morning on the day of the murders- an ensemble which does not match the description of her garment given by several witnesses that day of a cotton calico of light blue background with a dark blue figure all over it.
Officer Harrington would later give a detailed description of the wrapper which would make Lizzie smile at a man knowing such fashion details.
““It was a house wrap, striped with pink and light stripes, alternately. Pink was the predominate color. In the light stripe was a diagonal formed by lighter stripes, some parallel and others bias. It was fitted to the form in a tailor-made manner. It had a standing collar. It was closely shirred, gathered closely at the front. From the waist to the neck it was puffed with a number of folds. On either side, directly over the hips, was a narrow red ribbon. This was brought around in front and tied in a bowknot. It was cut with a demi-train or bell skirt which the ladies were in the habit of wearing last year.”
Carol Ann has designed the wrapper from this description.
